On-Demand Self-Service
01A consumer can unilaterally provision compute resources such as server time and network storage as needed automatically without requiring human interaction with each service provider.
Dynamics
02Provider compute resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to consumer demand. There is a sense of location independence where the customer often has no control or knowledge over the exact location of the provided resources, but can specify the location at a higher level of abstraction (eg country, state or datacenter). Examples of resources include storage, processing, memory, and network bandwidth.
Scalable
03Resources can be elastically provisioned and released, in some cases automatically, to quickly scale out and in on demand. To the consumer, the resources available for provisioning often seem limitless and can be appropriated in any amount at any time.
Billing
04Cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource usage by leveraging a metering capability1 at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (eg, storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts). Resource usage can be monitored, controlled and reported, providing transparency for both the provider and the consumer of the service used.
